VAIL FURNITURE

WE ARE A FAMILY-OWNED FURNITURE STORE THAT HAS BEEN IN BUSINESS SINCE 1844

HISTORY OF VAIL FURNITURE

Isaiah Vail moved to the Ripley area in the 1840's. Which at that time was actually still Virginia. Isaiah was a furniture maker by trade, so when he got to know the area and the people. He realized he loved this county.

In 1844 Isaiah Vail built his first coffin and sold it for $1.62 to a Mrs. Devenish and that's how it all began. Shortly after that Isaiah came to the realization that a funeral home was a natural outgrowth of his furniture making. So, he started his own business building and selling furniture and coffins.

Vails business has survived numerous wars including the Civil War and several economic depressions. Thankfully during the Civil War Isaiah Vail's Store was not burned and looted like so many other businesses at that time.

This is the original Vail Furniture and Funeral Home

This cash register is one of the cash registers used here in the store in the early to mid 1900's

Unfortunately, the Funeral Home side of the business does not exist anymore. Although, the Furniture side of the business is still going strong today.

Vail Furniture has been and still is a family-owned business since its establishment in 1844. It has been handed down through the generations. We still use one of the old cash registers from the business in the early 1900's to this day.

We also, have an old freight elevator that is over 100 years old. We use the hand operated elevator every day to take our furniture up and to put it on the second floor of the Furniture Store. To this day Vail Furniture remains one of, if not the oldest furniture stores in the Nation.
